Kreig D. Mitchell

Kreig Mitchell has spent his entire career inside the world of IRS audits — first as the person running them, then as the person defending against them.

He began as an IRS estate and gift tax attorney, conducting estate tax audits of some of the largest and most complex estates in the country. He then transferred to the IRS Office of Appeals, where he worked and settled every type of tax matter — from individual disputes to large-business adjustments — sitting on the other side of the table from taxpayers and their representatives.

After leaving the IRS, he served as Tax Director at two Fortune 500 companies — Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Newmont Mining — where he handled tax controversy for the largest and most complex audit issues, dealing with IRS examination teams and state revenue authorities on a regular basis. He also spent time as a Senior Tax Manager at KPMG LLP.

For the past 10+ years, Mr. Mitchell has run his own tax practice at Mitchell Tax Law, where he focuses on complex audits — including research tax credit audits, cost segregation audits, and medium and large business examinations — plus IRS Appeals and U.S. Tax Court litigation. He is licensed as an attorney in Texas and Colorado.
